“April 2004” synesthesia painting inspired by independent artist Isabel Rafeedie
This piece holds a very special place in my heart. When my sister-in-law, Isabel, reached out to me about translating a song connected to her father, I felt deeply honored. The music was a solo piano piece, tender and spacious, and as I listened, I saw soft pastel colors unfolding into gentle, wavy lines. It felt quiet, emotional, and full of presence.
At the beginning of the song, I experienced her father’s voice, which led me to create a section I call Heaven, where I embedded Hallelujah into the painting as a tribute. The music’s resonance felt like a presence just beyond reach and I captured it through subtle layers of light, movement, and color. The work became a space for memory, love, and grief to exist together, translated through color and movement.
The painting became both a remembrance and a meditation, a space where grief, love, and memory coexist and gently unfold.
